Le Mont-Saint-Michel is with good reason classified as one of the UNESCO's World Heritage sites ! Although it's far away from the rest of Normandy, this is one place you'll need to visit.
Mont-Saint-Michel is during several hours of the day an island, constituting a massive rock with an incredible defensive wall around it. When the tide is out, you can walk to the island. The place has not changed much since building started in the 11th century.
Since cars can not drive there, the cobblestone roads, the houses & buildings and all shops are what they used to be for centuries.
On the other side of the dike that gets you to the island, are all the hotels, restaurants and shopping centers.
Access to the island is free, the abbey/castle tour requries payment.
