Caen is an university city (the university was created in the 15th century) that has not been that badly damaged during WWII. The center of town is dominated by a very old fortified castle (see attractions). Inside the grounds of the castle are several museums. Caen is a great city for walking or cycling. It is busy, but not annoying. There are a lot of public parks, sidewalk cafes and shops. Caen also hosts the official WWII memorial (the WWII beaches are all very close). There are many old buildings and churches that have survived WWII. There are many pedestrian shopping streets in Caen. Most of them are cobblestone streets. Several places host open air markets. Old book shop The old and the new, a very old book shop, and a modern shopping center. Inside shopping center "Boneparte" High contrast between the very old and the very new. Battlestar Gallectica Caen is a pleasant city for walking or cycling. There are loads of nice buildings to see.
