Caen is a pretty city full of contrasts and it's the cultural center of Lower Normandy. Caen is an university city (the university was created in the 15th century) that has not been that badly damaged during WWII.
The center of town is dominated by a very old fortified castle (see attractions). Inside the grounds of the castle are several museums.
Caen is a great city for walking or cycling. It is busy, but not annoying. There are a lot of public parks, sidewalk cafes and shops.
Caen also hosts the official WWII memorial (the WWII beaches are all very close).
